De Kwakel, March 2025 – Amid his flourishing cut hydrangeas, Brazilian grower Adriano van Rooyen looks confidently to the future. Together with his daughter Camilla and her partner Lucas Salomons, he now cultivates cut hydrangeas on 7 hectares, including several varieties from HBA’s Tropical assortment. Jaap Stelder from HBA recently visited him in Holambra.
Stelder is enthusiastic about Van Rooyen’s approach. “Adriano constantly seeks the right cultivation method and strives to balance supply and demand as effectively as possible. In addition to fresh cut hydrangeas, he now also offers semi-classic and full-classic colors. The market appreciates this and responds positively.”
Van Rooyen began cultivating cut hydrangeas around 2015. This marked a new direction for him, as he was one of the first growers in Brazil to pioneer in cut hydrangeas. Before that, he primarily cultivated roses in Holambra and Andradas.
Today, Adriano, along with his daughter Camilla and her partner Lucas, has expanded the cut hydrangea acreage to 7 hectares. “With the knowledge he has gained, Adriano is increasingly capable of producing the best quality cut hydrangeas,” says Stelder.
Adriano cultivates, among others, the ‘Force’ variety, part of HBA’s Tropical breeding program. This program is specifically aimed at breeding cut hydrangeas for equatorial regions and includes varieties that have proven to be easy to cultivate under tropical climate conditions.
